Osmia apicata Smith, 1853

 

 

East Mediterranean species. In the sub-Mediterranean region of Slovenia.

Oligolectic, specialized on Onosma (Boraginaceae). Nests in wall hollows.

Univoltine. Flies from April to June.

 

Osmia apicata has the longest tongue in comparison to body length. It uses it to reach nectar in long and narrow Onosma flowers.

Stamens of the Onosma flower are bent together and conceal pollen within the cone thus formed. The bee shakes the cone with her legs and pollen drops to her body. A rustling sound is produced by this activity.
