ORNITHOLOGICAL COLLECTIONS OF THE SLOVENIAN NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM

OOLOGIC COLLECTION
This collection, which dates to the first half of the 19th century, is a legacy of Dr Janko Ponebšek. Embracing some 1,500 eggs, the collection is a precious comparative material, for it speaks of faunistic conditions existing at the time of its formation. The material originates mainly from Slovenian territory, with only its minor part coming from other parts of the Palaearctic region. Primarily due to the lack of exhibition space, the collection is not exhibited but kept in the museum depository.

RESEARCH COLLECTION OF BIRDS
This collection comprises over 5,000 stuffed bird skins, with specimens belonging to more than 200 different species of birds. The collection dates as far as to the period prior to World War I, considering that the oldest specimen among them originates from 1905. The bulk of the material comes from Slovenian territory, some from the territory of the former Yugoslavia, some even from other parts of the Palaearctic. The material has been systematically gathered mostly during various faunistic studies and research, while its main inflow is currently represented by the material assumed by the Museum on the basis of Decree on protection of rare and endangered animal species as well as of the valid European legislation. The collection is housed in the museum depository.

EXHIBITION COLLECTION OF BIRDS
The collection, which includes some 350 stuffed specimens belonging to 235 different bird species, originates from the mid-19th century. It is occasionally renewed and supplemented with new material, particularly by specimens acquired on the basis of Decree on protection of rare and endangered animal species. The exhibition collection is presented partially according to the birds' various habitats (forests, mountains, marshes, fields and meadows) and partially according to the bird systematics. It is utilized during different expert guidance, both for general visitors as well as pupils and students, while at times expert guidance is given for selected topics and accompanied by video projections.
