On the basis of its vocation, the Slovenian Museum of Natural History protects, studies and communicates the material and non-material heritage of natural origin as well as biodiversity. It also substantiates the zoological, botanical and geological collections, which are supplemented on the basis of the collecting policy.
The collecting policy of the Museum as of a national treasury of biodiversity and geological heritage of the Republic of Slovenia obliges the Museum to carry out a methodical collecting of cultural heritage of natural origin especially in the territory of Slovenia. Apart from cultural heritage of natural origin from Slovenian territory, the Museum also collects material, which is in connection with Slovenian territory or the Museum’s movable heritage of exceptional significance for professional, scientific, cultural or historical reasons.
The new building of the Slovenian Museum of Natural History in the
Biological Centre in Ljubljana
The museum building on Prešernova Street houses two state museums: the
Museum of Natural History and the National Museum of Slovenia. The new
construction will solve the spatial problems of both, and on the new
premises the Slovenian Museum of Natural History will carry out its mission
even to a greater satisfaction of us all.
