Apis mellifera Linnaeus, 1758

 

 

Palaearctic-Ethiopian species. Its natural distribution in Slovenia cannot be figured out because of cultivation. Today it is present in all parts of the country.

Polylectic social species. Nests in tree cavities.

In Slovenia two subspecies exist, but they interbreed and hybrids are common:

A. m. carnica Pollmann, 1879 (top photo),

West Balkan subspecies, widely distributed in Slovenia;

A. m. ligustica Spinola, 1806 (bottom photo),

Apenninic subspecies, common in the sub-Mediterranian region of Slovenia.
